In 1898, a black and white photo captures the allure of clapperboard houses and fences amidst the vibrant autumn colors. Traveling across continents, we find ourselves in Niedersfeld near Winterberg, Germany where a traditional inn Hochheide and village church stand proudly against the backdrop of North Rhine-Westphalia's picturesque landscape. Closer to home, Idaho welcomes us with open arms as an American flag flutters proudly in front of a barn adorned with this timeless material. Moving forward through time, we witness life unfolding within tenement districts - from Brockton, Massachusetts in 1940 to Stonington, Connecticut also captured by Jack Delano's lens. As our journey continues along the Delaware River in New York during 1943, John Collier immortalizes a charming church constructed using clapboard.
