The collared dove, scientifically known as the Eurasian Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto), is a striking bird that resembles a pigeon. With its buffy-pink plumage and distinctive black neck collar, this species stands out among other birds. In an illustration of this beautiful creature, one can appreciate its elegant appearance from a back view. Another related species is the Ring Dove (Streptopelia risoria), which shares similarities with the collared dove. Both birds possess captivating features that have captured human fascination for centuries. In fact, there is even an ancient coloured engraving depicting Jesus Christ and John The Baptist as boys alongside the Virgin Mary, where these doves are prominently featured. Beyond Europe and Asia, we find the African collared-dove (ringed) belonging to the Streptopelia genus. This variation showcases nature's diversity within this avian family. In Spain, one might come across a juvenile Eurasian Collared-Dove during their winter migration. These young doves add charm to any landscape they grace with their presence. During winter in Norfolk gardens, it is not uncommon to spot collared doves perched on feeders or fences. Their visits bring joy to those who observe them closely. As temperatures drop further in winter months, these resilient creatures seek warmth by bathing in garden bird baths or seeking shelter on hedges throughout the UK. Summertime offers another spectacle as collared doves build nests in gardens across the country. Witnessing these birds nurturing their young ones serves as a reminder of nature's cycle of life and renewal. Whether seen at feeders or nesting sites, collared doves continue to captivate us with their beauty and resilience throughout different seasons of the year.
