"Colossus: A Glimpse into Monumental Marvels of the Past" Step back in time and explore the awe-inspiring world of colossi, colossal structures that have captivated human imagination for centuries. From ancient wonders to modern marvels, these monumental creations continue to leave us in awe. One such remarkable creation is the Mappa Mundi, a medieval map dating back to c. 1290. Crafted on vellum, this intricate artwork showcases various landmarks including the Colossus of Rhodes - an iconic statue that once stood tall as one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Speaking of Rhodes, Cecil Rhodes envisioned his own version of a colossus with his ambitious plans for British imperialism. The controversial figure's dream was immortalized in "The Rhodes Colossus, " a 1892 artwork by Edward Linley Sambourne depicting him straddling continents like a giant. Moving forward through history, we encounter another kind aboard HMS Vengeance, a British aircraft carrier known for its imposing presence on the seas. This floating behemoth symbolizes military might and technological advancement. But not all colossi are man-made; some are natural wonders like the Mortuary Temple of Hatshepsut in Luxor, Egypt. Its grandeur stands testament to ancient Egyptian architectural prowess and pays tribute to Pharaoh Hatshepsut's reign. In America's industrial era emerged yet another type - economic giants who dominated entire industries with their monopolistic practices. Joseph Keppler's 1879 anti-trust cartoon portrays William Henry Vanderbilt, Cyrus W. Field, and Jay Gould as "The Modern Colossus (of Rail) Roads, " highlighting their control over railroads and their negative impact on competition. Taking flight into more contemporary times brings us face-to-face with "The Aerial Colossus.
