Constant Coquelin, also known as Coquelin aine, was a renowned French actor and comedian who lived from 1841 to 1909. Throughout his illustrious career, he captivated audiences with his exceptional talent and versatility on stage. One of the earliest illustrations featuring Constant Coquelin is by Emile Courtet dit Cohl for the cover of La Nouvelle Lune in 1880. The illustration depicts him adorned with medals and honors, symbolizing his remarkable achievements in the theater world. His portrayal of various characters earned him recognition and accolades such as the Legion d'honneur. Another notable illustration is from L'Assiette au Beurre in 1903. This satirical artwork showcases Coquelin's ability to entertain through humor while highlighting societal issues of that era. Coquelin's most iconic role was undoubtedly Cyrano de Bergerac, which he portrayed multiple times throughout his career. Photographs captured him donning Cyrano's distinctive costume, showcasing both his physical resemblance to the character and his mastery of dramatic performance. In addition to being an accomplished actor himself, Coquelin was part of an esteemed group known as "The interpreters of Moliere" at Comedie Francaise during the years 1862-1863. This ensemble brought Moliere's timeless works to life on stage, further solidifying their place in theatrical history. A portrait painted by Joseph Paul Blanc in 1864 immortalizes Constant Poppy (another name used by Coquelin) forever capturing his essence as an artist. The painting reflects not only Poppy's physical features but also hints at the depth and complexity behind his comedic persona. Les Contemporains featured Constant Coquelin on its cover number 34—an honor reserved for influential figures shaping contemporary culture at that time—underscoring his significant impact on French theater during this period.
