Cornelis Cornelisz van Haarlem was a renowned Dutch painter and engraver of the late 16th century. His works often depicted mythological and biblical themes, showcasing his exceptional talent and attention to detail. One of his notable pieces is "Icarus, " part of "The Four Disgracers" series created in 1588 by Hendrik Goltzius. This painting captures the tragic tale of Icarus, who flew too close to the sun with wings made of feathers and wax, resulting in his untimely demise. Another captivating artwork from this series is "The Dragon Devouring the Companions of Cadmus. " Van Haarlem's intricate brushwork brings to life the terrifying scene where a dragon mercilessly devours Cadmus' companions as punishment for killing its sacred serpent. In "Phaeton, " another piece from "The Four Disgracers, " we witness Phaeton's ill-fated attempt to drive Apollo's chariot across the sky. The chaotic composition reflects Phaeton's inability to control the fiery horses, ultimately leading to disaster. Van Haarlem also collaborated with Jan Muller on various artworks like "Cain Killing Abel. " This powerful depiction portrays one of humanity's first acts of violence, highlighting Cain's jealousy and anger towards his brother Abel. "Baptism of Christ" showcases van Haarlem's ability to capture religious scenes with emotional intensity. The painting depicts Jesus being baptized by John the Baptist, symbolizing purification and rebirth. Among their collaborative works is also "Arion on a Dolphin, " which tells the story of Arion, a legendary Greek musician saved by dolphins after being thrown overboard by greedy sailors captivated by his talents. "The Fight Between Ulysses & Irus" illustrates an encounter between Ulysses (Odysseus) and Irus (also known as Arnaeus), displaying van Haarlem's skill in portraying dynamic and dramatic scenes.
