Step back in time and immerse yourself in the captivating world of costume and fashion. From the fierce Celtic Chieftainess Boadicea to the elegant Byzantine Emperor Justinian, these stunning creations by Herbert Norris transport us to different eras. In 1924, Norris beautifully captured Samuel John Goviers' parents standing proudly at the doorway of his photographic van in Cornwall during the early 1900s. Their attire reflects a simpler yet stylish era, showcasing their timeless charm. Traveling further back in time, we encounter emperors and empresses who ruled with power and grace. The Byzantine Emperors of the Eighth, Ninth, Tenth, Eleventh, and Twelfth Centuries are depicted through Norris's intricate designs. Each garment tells a story of opulence and authority that once dominated these historical periods. The Empress Cunigunda from 1002-1024 AD exudes regal elegance while Emperor Henry II stands as a symbol of holiness during this same period. A French King from either the Carlovingian or Capetian Dynasties showcases royal grandeur that defined an entire era. Not forgetting our British heritage, King Arthur himself is brought to life wearing the traditional garb of a British chieftain from the sixth century AD. This representation reminds us of our rich history and legendary figures who continue to inspire us today. Norris also introduces us to Hengist Chief of Angles from AD 449 - an embodiment of strength and leadership within ancient tribes. And let's not overlook The Scandinavian Varangian Guard member whose attire speaks volumes about their role as protectors throughout history. Finally, we meet Theodora - an Empress reigning over Byzantium during the sixth century AD. Her majestic ensemble captures her influence on artistry and culture during her reign. These costumes take us on a journey through time where fashion was more than just clothing; it was a reflection of power, tradition, and identity.
