Emulating the brilliance of ancient Roman poet, Martial, Merula pens a heartfelt preface to his Epigrammata, illuminated by the soft glow of a dedicatory lantern adorned with pigeons. In contrast, the initial letter of the dedicatory text in Comentarios Reales, an edition from 1723, boasts a regal splendor, with the words "Molt exelent virtuos e glorios" (May these excellent and glorious men) inscribed in elegant script. A spiritual contrast unfolds as we journey through time and space, discovering Hebrew and Aramaic inscriptions on a mosaic floor of a synagogue. These ancient words, preserved for centuries, serve as a reminder of the enduring connection to the past and the richness of diverse cultural heritage. The power of dedication is further emphasized by a putto, a winged cherub, holding a dedicatory plaque, standing proudly before an ornate orb. The clay nails securing the plaque, C016 / 4535, bear witness to the importance of the moment, as they hold together the past and the present, the old and the new, in a timeless dance of history and tradition.
