Dictature, a word that evokes images of power and control, and is a term that has been associated with some of the darkest moments in history, where leaders seized authority and oppressed their people. In 1922, Benito Mussolini rose to power in Italy, marking the beginning of his fascist regime. With his charismatic speeches and promises of national rejuvenation, he captivated the masses. The illustration depicting Mussolini's seizure of power showcases the moment when democracy gave way to dictatorship. Mussolini wasted no time in silencing opposition voices. In February 1923, he orchestrated mass arrests of Communists in Trieste, conducting searches at the offices of "Lavoratore, " a newspaper critical of his regime. Damblans' drawing captures this chilling event as fear gripped those who dared to oppose him. The rise of dictators was not limited to Italy alone; it spread like wildfire across Europe. Josef Stalin emerged as one such figure in Russia during the early 1930s. A painting from 1933 portrays Stalin's stern face, reflecting both his iron grip on power and the cult-like adoration he commanded from his followers. Spain also fell victim to dictatorship when Miguel Primo de Rivera took control from 1923-1930. The black-and-white photograph shows members of Primo de Rivera's civil board alongside King Alfonso XIII - symbols representing an era marked by authoritarian rule. But perhaps one cannot discuss dictatures without mentioning Leon Trotsky - an enemy deemed so dangerous that even art became a weapon against him. Deni's artwork titled "Destroy the enemy of the people Trotsky. " depicts Trotsky being crushed underfoot by Soviet soldiers during Stalin's purges in 1937. As fascism continued its march through Europe, Mussolini made a speech in Berlin in October 1937 - showcasing how these dictators sought alliances beyond their own borders while spreading their ideologies far and wide.
