Domenico Fontana, an Italian architect and engineer of the late 16th century, left a lasting impact on Rome's architectural landscape. One of his notable works was the catafalque for Pope Sixtus V in 1591, which was created by Giovanni Maggi. This grand structure served as a tribute to the esteemed pontiff. Fontana's expertise also shone through when he successfully erected the Ancient Egyptian Obelisk in St. Peter's Square, Rome. This monumental feat showcased his engineering prowess and added a touch of ancient history to the cityscape. Inside St. Peter's Basilica, one cannot miss the awe-inspiring dome designed principally by Donato Bramante but perfected by Fontana himself. Its intricate interior view is nothing short of breathtaking and stands as a testament to Fontana's contribution to this iconic religious site. Another remarkable achievement attributed to Fontana is once again erecting an Ancient Egyptian Obelisk in St. Peter's Square, further emphasizing his ability to handle complex projects with precision and skill. His work extended beyond Rome as well; "Della Trasportatione dell'Obelisco Vaticano et delle Fabriche di Nostro Signore Papa" showcases his knowledge and involvement in transporting Vatican obelisks while highlighting other architectural endeavors under papal patronage. Fontana also left his mark on various churches across Italy, including San Luigi in Rome where he executed decoration ordered by Cardinal de Retz. His artistic flair combined with technical proficiency resulted in visually stunning creations that enhanced these sacred spaces. In Naples' Piazza Borsa stands Fountain of Neptune or Fountana Medina captured around 1900 by an unknown artist. Although not directly attributed to Domenico Fontana, it serves as a reminder of how fountains became integral elements within urban landscapes during this period. Additionally, Fontana played a role in shaping the interior design of the Vatican Library.
