In the heart of London, in 1967, the legendary Buddy Rich took center stage with his drumsticks poised and ready. The crowd held their breath as he unleashed a rhythmic storm that shook the very foundations of music. This captivating moment was captured by Brian Foskett, forever immortalizing the genius of one of history's greatest drummers. Across time and continents, drums have echoed through pivotal moments in history. In Howard Pyle's oil on canvas masterpiece from 1906, "The Nation Makers, " we witness the Battle of Brandywine during the Revolutionary War. Amidst chaos and gunfire, a drummer boy stands tall, beating out a rallying cry for freedom. Fast forward to 1968 in London once again; Joe Morello takes his turn under Brian Foskett's lens. With lightning speed and precision, Morello mesmerizes audiences with his virtuosity on the drums. His beats reverberate through every corner of Queen Elizabeth Hall. Speaking of battles, Howard Pyle brings us another iconic scene: The Battle of Bunker Hill in 1898. As soldiers clash swords and musket balls fly through the air, a drummer boy fearlessly pounds away at his instrument amidst chaos and carnage—a symbol of unwavering courage amid adversity. From military regiments to recruitment posters during WWI featuring Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders or Grenadier Guards at St Michaels Mount—drummers have always played an essential role in keeping armies marching to victory. But it wasn't just war where drumming left its mark; it also found its place within jazz ensembles around the world. Jack DeJohnette's explosive performance at Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1989 showcases how drums can transcend boundaries and captivate audiences across genres. Elvin Jones' Jazz Machine brought rhythm to life at Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles back in 1997—an unforgettable night where the drums became a force of nature, commanding attention and igniting passion.
