Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale: A Life Cut Short Amidst the lush jungles of Mysore, India, in 1890, Prince Albert Victor, Duke of Clarence and Avondale, was fondly known as the 'Elephant King' as he joyfully rode in a Jungle Waggon. His adventurous spirit was evident in the HMS Bacchante's voyages, where he served as a midshipman. The Duke's mother, the Princess of Wales, warmly welcomed her sailor sons upon their return home in 1880. However, tragedy struck when the Duke passed away during the worldwide influenza pandemic in 1892, leaving behind a grieving nation. His memory lived on through the Albert Memorial Chapel in Windsor, built in his honor, and his planned tomb, designed by Alfred Gilbert. The Duke's engagement to Mary of Teck, who would later become Queen Consort of the United Kingdom, was captured in a Spanish magazine in 1892. The Duke of Clarence and King George shared a close bond, as depicted in this photograph from 1875. The Duke's life was filled with adventure, love, and ultimately, an untimely end. What the nation hoped to see was a long and prosperous reign, but fate had other plans.
