Step into the world of ebanisteria, where intricate woodwork tells stories of history and art. In the heart of Genoa, inside the magnificent Duomo (St Lawrence Cathedral), lies a hidden gem - the choir. As you enter the apse, your eyes are immediately drawn to the breathtaking wood intarsia by Giovanni Francesco Zambelli from the XVI century. On the South side of the choir, "The Massacre of Innocents" captivates with its detailed craftsmanship. Each delicate piece of wood intricately carved to depict this tragic biblical event. The emotions portrayed in this artwork are palpable, leaving you in awe. Moving to the North side, another masterpiece awaits - "Salome with the head of Baptist. " Zambelli's skillful hands bring this scene to life through his mastery in wood intarsia. The depth and realism achieved is truly remarkable. Adjacent to it is "The Beheading of Baptist, " equally mesmerizing in its execution. The attention to detail transports you back in time as you witness this dramatic moment unfold before your eyes. Further along on both sides lie more wonders - an enchanting "Allegory" on one side and "The Baptist in wilderness" on another. These pieces showcase Zambelli's versatility as an artist and his ability to breathe life into each wooden panel. As you explore deeper into ebanisteria within St Lawrence Cathedral, other notable works come into view: "Moses rescued from waters, " a testament to faith; "St Syrus drives away basilisk, " showcasing bravery; "The Baptism of Christ, " symbolizing rebirth; and finally, "The martyrdom of St Lawrence, " depicting sacrifice for belief. Each piece bears witness not only to Zambelli's genius but also serves as a window into historical events that shaped our world today. Ebanisteria at its finest – preserving stories through exquisite woodworking techniques passed down through generations.
