Edouard Manet was a renowned French artist known for his innovative approach to painting. His works captured the essence of everyday life and challenged traditional artistic conventions. In "The Railway, " painted in 1873, Manet depicted a bustling scene at Gare Saint Lazare, showcasing his ability to capture the energy and movement of modernity. "The House at Rueil, " completed in 1882 but not exhibited until 1926, reveals Manet's skillful use of light and color to create a serene atmosphere. In "Moonlight over the Port of Boulogne" from 1869, Manet masterfully captures the ethereal beauty of moonlit waters, demonstrating his ability to evoke emotion through brushstrokes alone. "The Races, " painted in 1865, showcases Manet's interest in capturing moments of leisure and entertainment with bold strokes and vibrant colors. Manet also excelled in still-life paintings such as "Violets and Clematis in a crystal vase" from 1882. The delicate arrangement is rendered with precision and attention to detail that highlights both the fragility of flowers and their timeless beauty. His portraits were equally captivating; one example is "Portrait of a Lady" created around 1882-83 using pastel on primed linen canvas. This piece demonstrates Manet's ability to capture personality through subtle facial expressions. Manet also explored different mediums like wash & Chinese white on paper as seen in "At the Cafe" from c. 1880 or pastel on primed linen canvas used for Marie Colombier portrait from c. 1880. One notable early work by Manet is "The Spanish Dancer, Don Mariano Camprubi, " executed with pencil & wash on paper around 1862 which showcases his talent for capturing movement even within static images.
