Edward Longshanks, also known as Edward I, was a formidable king of England who left an indelible mark on history. One of his most significant triumphs was the Battle of Evesham in 1265, where he led royalist forces to victory against Simon de Montfort during the Second Barons War. This decisive battle marked the end of the rebellion and secured Edward's position on the throne. As a symbol of his reign, we have a stunning depiction of King Edward I's coronation. The regal ceremony captured in MS. Marlay Add. f2b De Re Miliatari showcases Vegitius receiving young Prince Edward and his companions around 1270. Portraits are often used to immortalize great rulers, and Edward I is no exception. We have two prints showcasing his majestic presence - one from an unknown source and another from a print believed to be created during his lifetime. Despite being a powerful monarch, even kings need medical attention at times. In "Edward's Arm in the Hands of His Medical Advisers, " we see him being treated after surviving an assassination attempt in Acre in 1272. This hand-colored etching from The Comic History of England published in 1864 provides us with insight into medieval medicine practices. Another engraving portrays King Edward I himself; it captures both his strength and determination that characterized his rule over England for many years. Edward I earned himself the title "Hammer Of The Scots" due to his relentless campaigns against Scotland. A lithograph aptly titled "King Edward I, Hammer Of The Scots" depicts this fearsome reputation with striking imagery that highlights both power and brutality. To delve deeper into English history, we have a genealogical roll dating back to c. 1440-79 depicting all the kings preceding Edward I on parchment using pen & ink technique—a testament to how far-reaching Longshanks' legacy was.
