Eleftherios Venizelos, the charismatic Greek politician and Prime Minister, found himself in exile in Paris during World War I. Amidst the chaos of the conflict, Venizelos' spirit remained unbroken. In these photos, he is seen at Lloyd George's farm in Churt, Surrey, playing the piano, reflecting on the tumultuous events unfolding in his homeland. Back in Greece, the Revolution of Theriso was in full swing. Venizelos, a key figure in the uprising, is depicted reviewing a Greek regiment, determined to lead his people to freedom. However, his actions did not go unnoticed by the Central Powers. German caricatures portrayed Venizelos, along with Cadorna and Nikolayevich, as the masterminds behind the war. Despite the adversity, Venizelos' resolve never wavered. He returned to Greece in 1916, arriving in Thessaloniki on board the Hesperis. The insurgents at Malaxa welcomed him with open arms, ready to continue the fight for their country's independence. Through it all, Eleftherios Venizelos remained a symbol of hope and resilience in the face of adversity.
