Emile Presuhn was a renowned artist and art historian who dedicated his life to capturing the beauty of Pompeii through his illustrations. His work provides us with a glimpse into the vibrant world of ancient Roman art. One of Presuhn's notable pieces is a chromolithograph depicting a wall painting of Iphigenia from the tablinum of the House of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus. This captivating artwork showcases intricate details and vivid colors, transporting viewers back in time to witness this mythological scene. Presuhn also captured decorative ornaments from the same house, showcasing their exquisite craftsmanship. These delicate designs add an element of elegance and sophistication to any space they adorn. Another remarkable illustration by Presuhn features a wall painting from the Domus M. Asellini or House of Adonis, also known as Casa di Ione or Casa con Xystus. The artwork depicts an arabesque with stag and cupid, evoking feelings of enchantment and romance. In addition to these masterpieces, Presuhn documented various other paintings found in Pompeii. One such piece is a landscape painting from the Exedra in the House of Vesonius Primus, which captures nature's serene beauty with meticulous detail. Presuhn's collection also includes a depiction of Narcissus contemplating his reflection, believed to have been found in the Casa delle Vestali or House of Vestals. This hauntingly beautiful portrayal reflects both vanity and self-reflection. Furthermore, he immortalized stucco design with Bacchantes from the House Epigrams that unfortunately perished soon after its discovery but lives on through Presuhn's illustration. Preserving not only grandiose artworks but everyday scenes as well, he depicted genre paintings like two young satyrs enjoying grapes alongside their faithful dog near Regio VI's new fullonica (fuller's shop).
