Epsom Racecourse, located in Victorian London, holds a rich history of thrilling races and iconic moments. One such moment was The Princes Second Derby in 1900, where the crowd witnessed an exhilarating display of skill and speed. Diamond Jubilee emerged as the victor, crossing the finish line first amidst thunderous applause. The racecourse itself is a sight to behold, as depicted in the engraving titled "Epsom Racecourse, the Coming In. " The artwork captures the grandeur and excitement that fills every corner of this historic venue. Another stunning portrayal is Gustave Doré's "A Sketch on the Downs" from 1872, showcasing the picturesque landscape surrounding Epsom. Gustave Doré also immortalized Tattenham Corner in his masterpiece "The Derby - Tattenham Corner. " This famous turn has challenged jockeys for decades with its sharp bend and undulating terrain, and is here that champions are made or dreams shattered. Amidst all this action, there are moments of respite captured by Doré's work titled "At Lunch. " Jockeys and spectators alike take a break from their racing fervor to enjoy some well-deserved nourishment before returning to witness more breathtaking contests. In 1896, another significant event took place at Epsom Racecourse – The Princes First Derby. His Royal Highness led Persimmon towards victory while etching his name into racing history once again. Such triumphs solidify Epsom's status as an arena where legends are born. Over time, it has evolved but maintained its allure. A photograph from c1910 showcases its timeless charm against a backdrop of changing times. Sporting characters have come and gone throughout history; one such group was captured in an intriguing image dating back to c1832 when horse racing was still finding its footing as a popular pastime.
