"Expelled: A Journey from Heaven to Earth, through Art and History" Embark on a captivating journey as we explore the theme of expulsion throughout various artistic masterpieces and historical events. From Milton's epic poem "Paradise Lost" to Michelangelo's breathtaking frescoes in the Sistine Chapel, these works of art depict moments when individuals or entities were cast out from their paradises. In Milton's "Paradise Lost, " Satan and his rebellious angels are forcefully expelled from Heaven, forever banished from its divine glory. Gustave Dor's wood engravings vividly capture this dramatic scene, showcasing the sheer magnitude of their fall. Baruch Spinoza, known for his controversial ideas during the Enlightenment period, faced intellectual exile due to his radical thoughts challenging traditional religious beliefs. A caricature depicts him as an outsider who was expelled by society for daring to question established norms. The Chartreuse Advert of 1906 portrays a different kind of expulsion – that of temptation. It reminds us how easily we can be led astray and expelled from our own personal paradises if we succumb to allurements that divert us from our true paths. Michelangelo's iconic fresco in the Sistine Chapel showcases Adam and Eve being tempted by the serpent before their ultimate expulsion from Paradise. The intricate details convey both their vulnerability and the consequences they face for disobeying divine command. Giovanni Di Paolo captures another momentous event with his tempera painting depicting Adam and Eve being expelled from Paradise. Their sorrowful expressions reflect not only their loss but also humanity's eternal longing for a lost paradise. Scenes illuminated in an English Psalter take us through Genesis' creation story, birth of Eve, fall into sin, and eventual expulsion. These illuminations remind us that even though humans were created in God's image, they too can be cast out when they stray away from righteousness.
