"Fettered: A Captive World Unveiled" In a world plagued by the fettered war god, humanity's struggles are laid bare. From ancient times to the present day, the concept of being fettered has taken on various forms and meanings. One such instance is depicted in the Codex of Predis, where Jesus meets a man possessed by evil spirits. The chains that bind him symbolize not only his physical captivity but also his spiritual torment. The haunting image of a slave coffle passing the unfinished Capitol in Washington before the Civil War serves as a stark reminder of America's dark history. Engraved with vivid colors, it portrays the dehumanizing reality faced by those held captive against their will. Solomon Northup's Twelve Years a Slave further exposes this grim truth through an illustration depicting scenes within a slave pen in Washington. The engraving captures both the physical restraints and emotional anguish endured by enslaved individuals during this era. A colored engraving showcasing a slave coffle marching across the USA before the Civil War emphasizes how widespread and deeply rooted slavery was throughout American society. It highlights how countless lives were fettered under oppressive systems that denied them basic human rights. Turning our gaze towards Montezuma before Cortes, we witness another form of bondage - one imposed upon indigenous peoples during colonization. T. C. Bridges' illustration from The Book of Discovery reveals Montezuma chained and subjugated, representing conquest and domination at its most brutal. Saint Bernard of Clairvaux's depiction shows us even spiritual entities can be fettered; here we see a powerful demon bound by chains painted on canvas. This artwork reminds us that even forces beyond our comprehension can be restrained when confronted with faith and determination. Traveling to China, we encounter yet another facet of confinement - punishment through chaining criminals to iron bars as seen in The Punishments of China series. These images offer insight into different cultural practices surrounding captivity and the enforcement of justice.
