Field Marshal Blucher: A Hero of Waterloo Field Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher, also known as "Marshal Forwards, " was a prominent Prussian military leader who played a crucial role in the Battle of Waterloo. His alliance with the Duke of Wellington proved to be instrumental in defeating Napoleon Bonaparte and ending his reign. Blucher's indomitable spirit and unwavering determination were evident during the historic meeting between him and Wellington at Waterloo on June 18, 1815. This encounter, depicted in various artworks such as "Meeting of Wellington and Blücher at Waterloo" (1936), showcased their strategic collaboration that would change the course of history. One such artwork capturing this momentous occasion is Thomas Stevens' painting titled "Wellington & Blugher [sic], England" (1875/1900). It immortalizes their partnership, highlighting their shared goal to vanquish Napoleon's forces once and for all. The battle itself was fierce, but it was after the dust settled that another iconic meeting took place. The engraving aptly named "Meeting of Wellington and Blucher after the battle of Waterloo" depicts these two great commanders discussing their triumph over adversity. Their unity symbolized hope for a brighter future amidst Europe's turmoil. Blucher's valor extended beyond just one battle; he had been an influential figure throughout numerous conflicts leading up to this decisive moment. Paintings like "The Allied Bakers or the Corsican Toad in the Hole" (April 1, 1814) depict his relentless pursuit against Napoleon's forces even before Waterloo. Blücher's bravery knew no bounds; he fearlessly led troops into battles like Ligny on June 16th, 1815 ("Blücher at the Battle of Ligny").
