"Fled: A Journey Through Time and Turmoil" Step back in time to the year 1721, when the infamous South Sea Bubble shook the financial world. Investors fled as their fortunes crumbled, leaving chaos in its wake. Traveling further east, we arrive at Damascus, Syria, where ancient walls stand witness to countless stories of escape. One such tale is that of St. Paul's daring flight from persecution through these very walls. Fast forward to January 1939, as Spanish Republican refugees desperately sought safety on their treacherous journey towards the French border. Women and children formed a straggling line under the watchful eyes of French Gardes mobiles. In Perthus, France, defeated soldiers of the Republican Army found themselves transformed into refugees after losing the Spanish Civil War in 1939. Their lives forever altered by conflict and displacement. Meanwhile, Erminia and the Shepherds find solace amidst pen and ink on paper from c. 1600 – an artistic depiction capturing both beauty and escapism. Damascus' ancient walls reappear once more alongside Bab Sharqi Gate; a testament to humanity's enduring need for refuge throughout history. From there we shift our focus to moments captured in color lithographs – scenes depicting both joyous greetings among subjects and harrowing exoduses driven by hunger in China or turmoil within Shanghai's depths. Lastly, we glimpse into Europe's tumultuous past with a vivid lithograph showcasing dramatic moments along Poland-Germany borders during times of crisis. "Fled" encapsulates tales woven across centuries – stories of survival against all odds; journeys marked by desperation but also resilience; reminders that seeking sanctuary is an intrinsic part of our shared human experience.
