"Fleeing: A Journey of Escape, Survival, and Hope" In the midst of chaos and uncertainty, the concept takes on various forms throughout history. From Kateri Tekakwitha's escape from persecution to Jules Verne's Nautilus submarine evading its pursuers, the act has been a recurring theme in human existence. Artwork such as Leon-Maxime Faivre's "Deux meres (Two Mothers)" captures the desperation and determination that drive individuals to flee. Similarly, the wood engraving "Death as Assassin" reminds us that sometimes a matter of life or death. The tale of Apollo and Daphne immortalizes their flight from love turned into pursuit. Meanwhile, posters like "Evacuation as a National Service" depict how communities come together during times of crisis to ensure everyone can escape harm's way. Religious narratives also portray instances where fleeing plays a pivotal role. The depiction of Christ Rising from the Tomb shows Roman soldiers hastily retreating in fear while others witness an extraordinary event unfold before them. Even in lighter contexts, such as 18th-century art piece "The Feathered Fair in a Fright, " we see comical scenes where people flee with feathers flying amidst amusement-filled chaos. However, not all instances are lighthearted; some are marked by tragedy. The image capturing Serbian army protecting peasants escaping to Albania during World War I serves as a haunting reminder of displacement caused by conflict. Arthur Rackham's artwork titled "I flee for the first time and am pursued" encapsulates both vulnerability and resilience when faced with adversity. It portrays our instinctual response to danger – running away – but also highlights how pursuing forces may relentlessly chase after us. History bears witness to countless episodes where entire populations had no choice but to flee for their lives. One example being Belgians fleeing Termonde during World War I showcases the immense hardships faced by refugees seeking safety.
