Frances Alice Jones Johnston (1864-1952): A trailblazing African American architect and educator. In 1899, she became the first Black woman to receive an honorable mention in the American Institute of Architects' annual Salon Jury competition. Her groundbreaking achievements continued as she designed numerous buildings for the Tuskegee Institute, including the 25th anniversary celebration in 1906. Her innovative designs and commitment to education left a lasting impact on architecture and higher education.
