Francisco Pizarro, the renowned Spanish conquistador, left an indelible mark on history with his audacious exploits in Peru. In one captivating illustration, we see him standing next to the mighty Inca Emperor Atahualpa in a room overflowing with shimmering gold. This image encapsulates the allure and riches that drew Pizarro and his fellow adventurers to embark on their perilous journey. However, not all was glory and triumph for Pizarro. Another engraving depicts the tragic fate of Atahualpa at the hands of this ambitious conqueror. The Inca Emperor met his demise through strangulation under Pizarro's orders in 1533, and is a haunting reminder of the brutality that often accompanied conquest during this era. Pizarro's birthplace, Trujillo, pays homage to its famous son with an equestrian statue capturing his commanding presence as he once rode through Peruvian lands. This monument stands as a testament to his lasting impact on both Spain and Peru. The conquest itself is vividly portrayed in yet another engraving from Francisco Lopez de Gomara's Historia General de las Indias y Nuevo Mundo. It showcases the clash between European invaders and indigenous peoples during this tumultuous period of exploration. In a color lithograph depicting great voyages of discovery, we catch a glimpse of Pizarro urging his comrades onward towards their ultimate goal: conquering Peru. His determination shines through as he rallies them for what would become one of history's most significant expeditions. Various portraits further immortalize Francisco Pizarro - from engravings showcasing his stern countenance to chromolithographs capturing every detail of this legendary figure who forever changed South American history. One particularly striking artwork portrays "Pizarro Seizing the Inca of Peru" in oil on canvas; it evokes both awe-inspiring bravery and ruthless ambition simultaneously.
