1823: A Year of Enchantment in French Theater - Mlle Virginie Dejazet's heart-wrenching portrayal of Mimi in Grisettes, Scribe and Dupin's one-act vaudeville at Gymnase-Dramatique, was matched by the comic brilliance of Charles-Francois Mazurier as Polichinello in Polichinelle Vampire at Theatre de la Porte Saint-Martin. Louise-Charlotte-Theophile-Delphine Escoffie, or Mlle Mante, captivated audiences as Laure in L Education ou les Deux Cousines by Casimir Bonjour at Theatre Francais. Jean-Baptiste Firmin's moving performance as Andre in Pauvre Famille by Benjamin and Melchior at Theatre de l'Ambigu Comique was contrasted by the Italian soprano sensation, Giuditta Pasta, in the lead role of Tancredi at Opera Buffa, Paris. Bertin's powerful portrayal of Zug in Pauvre Berger by Daubigny, Carmouche and Hyacinthe at Theatre du Panorama Dramatique was complemented by Fanny Chalboz's spirited performance as La Bourguignonne in Cuisinieres by Nicholas Brazier at Theatre des Varietes. Perrier's dual role as Dupont, L'Homme marie in Le Celibataire et l'Homme marie by Alexis-Jacques-Marie Wafflard at Odeon added to the year's theatrical richness. The artistry continued to thrive, as evidenced in the works of Charles-Nicolas Cochin I, inspired by Jean-Antoine Watteau's masterpieces.
