Georges Rochegrosse (1859-1935): A French painter known for his dynamic and richly detailed works, Rochegrosse's oeuvre spanned various genres from history painting to portraits and landscapes. His masterpieces, such as "Onslaught of the Tartars" and "Salome," showcase his ability to capture dramatic moments with vivid colors and intricate brushstrokes. Rochegrosse's work extended beyond canvases, as seen in his book cover illustrations, including a female nude strewing roses in a landscape for "War and Peace." In his studio portraits, including a black and white photograph from 1885 and a self-portrait from 1859, Rochegrosse's dedication to his craft is evident. Later in his career, he continued to explore new themes, such as the enigmatic "Queen of Assyria" and the introspective "The Mirror." Rochegrosse's versatility is further demonstrated in his portraits of notable figures like Sarah Bernhardt and the young musician, as well as his intriguing astrologer character in "Astrologue.
