Geremia Discanno was an incredibly talented artist known for his beautiful illustrations of ancient Roman wall paintings found in Pompeii. His work captured the intricate details and vibrant colors of these ancient artworks, allowing us to appreciate their beauty even today. One of his notable illustrations is a chromolithograph depicting a wall painting of Iphigenia from the tablinum of the House of Lucius Caecilius Iucundus. The painting showcases the tragic Greek heroine, capturing her grace and emotion in stunning detail. Another illustration by Discanno features decorative ornaments from the same house's tablinum. These ornate designs showcase the exquisite craftsmanship and attention to detail that were prevalent during this time period. Discanno also illustrated a captivating wall painting from Domus Vedi Sirici or House of Siricus, which depicts an arabesque with stag and cupid on top, while below is a panel with a mask of Pan. This artwork showcases both mythical elements and natural motifs seamlessly blended together. In one particularly striking illustration, Discanno captures a landscape painting from the Exedra in the House of Vesonius Primus. The detailed depiction transports viewers into an idyllic scene filled with lush greenery and serene waterways. Narcissus contemplating his reflection is another subject brought to life by Discanno's talent. This wall painting, said to have been found in Casa delle Vestali or House of the Vestals, portrays Narcissus captivated by his own image in still waters—a hauntingly beautiful portrayal. Stucco design with Bacchantes from the House of Epigrams is yet another example where Discanno's skill shines through. Although this mural perished soon after its discovery in 1875, we are fortunate enough to have his illustration as evidence showcasing its intricate design featuring lively Bacchantes figures. Genre paintings were also part of Discanno's repertoire.
