German Expressionism was a groundbreaking art movement that emerged in the early 20th century, characterized by its bold and emotive style. Artists like Franz Marc, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and Emil Nolde were at the forefront of this movement, creating powerful and thought-provoking works. One such masterpiece is "A Tower of Blue Horses" painted by Franz Marc in 1913. This oil on canvas painting showcases Marc's fascination with animals and his use of vibrant colors to convey emotions. The blue horses stand tall against a vivid background, symbolizing freedom and spirituality. In his self-portrait from 1911, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner captures himself using pencil and watercolor on paper. This introspective piece reveals the artist's inner turmoil through distorted lines and intense brushstrokes. Another notable work is "Reclining woman in red trousers and standing female nude" created by Egon Schiele in 1912. Using gouache as his medium, Schiele explores themes of sexuality and vulnerability through these two contrasting figures. Franz von Stuck's "Nude Boy Standing; Stehender Knabenakt, " an oil on canvas painting from an unknown date, portrays innocence intertwined with sensuality. The young boy's gaze invites viewers into a world filled with curiosity. Italian artist Carlo Carrà contributed to German Expressionism with his piece "Stelle della strada" in 1912. Through ink and watercolor on paper, Carrà depicts bustling city life while incorporating elements of Cubism into his composition. Max Pechstein expresses himself through various mediums as seen in his self-portrait from 1910 where he uses gouache, watercolor, and charcoal on paper. This multi-layered artwork reflects Pechstein's complex personality while showcasing his technical skills. Else Lasker-Schüler presents her unique perspective through "Lying Young Girl, Half Nude" completed in 1912.
