Greek Mythology is a captivating world filled with tales of gods, heroes, and mythical creatures. From the tragic story of Oedipus and the Sphinx to the heroic deeds of Achilles, these ancient myths continue to captivate our imagination. In "Oedipus and the Sphinx, " painted in 1808 by an unknown artist, we witness Oedipus' encounter with the enigmatic creature. The riddle posed by the Sphinx tests his intelligence and determination. "Hermes, " depicted in a pochoir print from Aeschylus' "Promethee Enchaine" published in 1941, showcases this mischievous messenger god's swift agility as he carries out his divine tasks. The ceiling fresco in the Sala delle Muse transports us to Apollo's realm where stories of him and his muses unfold. Painted between 1782-87, it immerses us into a world of artistic inspiration and creativity. "Achilles and the Daughters of Archimedes" portrays Achilles engaging with beautiful maidens while preparing for battle. This oil on canvas painting captures both his strength as a warrior and vulnerability as a man. In another scene from Greek mythology captured on fresco in 1757 titled "Eurybates and Talthybius leading Briseis to Agamemnon, " we witness the aftermath of war as Briseis is reluctantly handed over to Agamemnon after being taken captive during battle. "Hercules slaying Antaeus" depicts Hercules' epic struggle against this formidable opponent. This detail from a fresco dating back to the 16th century showcases Hercules' immense strength as he triumphs over adversity once again. Niobe's heartbreaking tale unfolds through hand-colored engravings in Florence's edition of Ovid's Metamorphoses from 1832. In "Niobe is slain with Her Children, " we witness the tragic consequences of her hubris and defiance towards the gods.
