The griffon, a mythical creature with the body of a lion and the head and wings of an eagle, has captivated human imagination for centuries. In Mappa Mundi, a vellum map dating back to c. 1290, we see depictions of this majestic beast in Picture No. 11768886. But the griffon is not just confined to ancient manuscripts; it also finds its place in our world today. One such representation is seen in the Pointer Dog - Wire-haired Pointing Griffon / Korthals Griffon breed, showcased in Standards of Old England (colour litho) Picture No. 11772646. These dogs embody the grace and strength associated with their mythical namesake. Interestingly enough, there are even tales of griffons preaching to the Maronites of Mount Lebanon. This extraordinary image speaks volumes about how deeply ingrained these creatures are within our cultural consciousness. But it doesn't stop there – evidence suggests that carved griffon heads were used as ballast on ships' hulls, showcasing their significance beyond mere folklore. Countess Howe Dog further exemplifies how this fantastical creature has permeated various aspects of society throughout history. In nature too, we find glimpses reminiscent of the legendary griffon's grandeur. Ruppell's vulture (Gyps rueppelli), also known as Ruppell's griffon vulture, majestically soars above Jinbar waterfalls in Simien Mountains National Park, Ethiopia – a testament to both its awe-inspiring presence and its connection to mythology. Even artists have been inspired by this enigmatic creature; Mille fleurs tapestry fragments from around 1500 depict animals and birds alongside landscapes where one can spot representations resembling griffons amidst their intricate designs. Lastly but not leastly - The Allies: five breeds of dog by Maud Earl showcases different dog breeds, including the griffon, highlighting their loyalty and courage.
