Amidst the tumultuous 16th century, the Guerres de Religion, or French Religious Wars, tore through France. This period of intense conflict, sparked by religious differences between Catholics and Protestants, saw numerous battles and assassinations that shaped the country's future. On December 23, 1588, Henry III ordered the assassination of Henry of Guise, a prominent Protestant leader, marking a turning point in the wars. The Battle of Ivry, fought on March 14, 1590, saw Henry III's forces, led by Henry IV, defeat the Catholic League, led by Mayenne, at Ivry-sur-Seine. Yet, the wars continued, with the Siege of La Rochelle, a major Protestant stronghold, lasting from August 1572 to October 1573. This watercolor painting, created around 1930, captures the intensity and chaos of the era, serving as a poignant reminder of the devastating impact of religious strife on France.
