"Maurice Guibert: The Unseen Connection Between Art and History Maurice Guibert, a lesser-known figure in the art world, is often overshadowed by the more famous Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec. However, Guibert's influence extends beyond just being Toulouse-Lautrec's photographer. In this image, Guibert dons Japanese attire, mirroring Toulouse-Lautrec's exploration of exoticism in his art (Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in Japanese dress, ca 1892). Meanwhile, Toulouse-Lautrec immortalized Guibert in his paintings, such as 'At the Cafe La Mie' (c1891) and 'At the Moulin Rouge' (1892). Yet, Guibert's own artistic contributions are worth noting. He captured the spirit of the era in his photography, while his name is also linked to the Chanson de Gestes, a medieval epic poem. The Chanson de Guillaume d'Orange, specifically, features illustrations of Guillaume, a warrior, dressed as a merchant, conquering Nimes (illuminations from 13th and 14th century manuscripts). Fast forward to the 19th century, and we find another Guillaume - Joseph Guibert, a count and a military officer, whose wedding was documented by none other than Toulouse-Lautrec (Comte De Guibert). Thus, Maurice Guibert's connection to the art world is multifaceted, bridging the gap between the past and the present, and between the roles of artist and subject." (Size.
