Guru Rinpoche, the Precious Master, is a revered figure in Himalayan Buddhism. Legend has it that he visited Membartsho, a sacred site in Bhutan, where he is said to have transformed into Garuda, the mythical bird, to subdue a demoness terrorizing the region. His transformative powers are also depicted in the Tigers Nest Buddhist monastery in Bhutan, where a painting of Garuda soars above. Guru Rinpoche's influence extends beyond Bhutan, with murals and rock paintings dedicated to him found in Nepal's Solu Khumbu Everest Region and India's Himachal Pradesh. In the movie "Travelers and Magicians," we see a scene inspired by the rock painting in Trongsa, Bhutan. The legend continues to captivate the imagination of artists, as seen in this Garuda painting by students at Bhutan's National Institute for Zorig Chusum, the school of thirteen arts and crafts. May the wisdom and compassion continue to inspire and protect us all.
