Hanshiro Iwai, also known as Hanshiro IV, was a renowned actor in the world of Japanese Kabuki theater during the late 18th century. His talent and versatility on stage made him a beloved figure among audiences. In one of his notable performances, he portrayed Kikusui in the play "Matsuwa Misao Onna Kusunoki" in 1794. This role showcased his ability to bring depth and emotion to his characters. Another memorable portrayal by Iwai Hanshiro IV was that of Kojoro-gitsune in the play "O, " alongside Kataoka Nizaemon VII as Iyo no Taro. Their chemistry on stage captivated viewers and left a lasting impression. Iwai Hanshiro IV's skills were not limited to dramatic roles alone. In 1794, he played Otoma, Daughter of Ohina from Inamuragasaki in Kansei The delicate portrayal of this character demonstrated his versatility as an actor. Collaborating with other talented actors like Yamashita Mangiku and Iwai Kumesaburo, Iwai Hanshiro IV became part of a pentaptych created by Torii Kiyonaga in 1788. This piece showcased their collective brilliance and artistic expression. One cannot forget his performance as Sakura Hime alongside Matsumoto Koshiro IV as Priest Seigen in 1773. The chemistry between these two actors brought magic to the stage and left audiences spellbound. Throughout his career, Iwai Hanshiro IV took on various challenging roles such as Tennen no Mansaku-kitsune and Nikaido alongside Bando Mitsugoro II and Ichikawa Monnosuke III respectively. These portrayals displayed his range as an actor who could effortlessly switch between different characters.
