Heinrich Rudolf Schinz, a renowned naturalist and artist, captured the beauty and diversity of the animal kingdom in his groundbreaking work, "Illustrated Natural History of Men and Animals. " Through detailed lithographs created by Karl Joseph Brodtmann, Schinz documented various species that faced threats of extinction or had already vanished from our world. One such illustration depicts the tragic fate of Tasmanian aborigines. In haunting portraits by Nicola Martin Petite, we see Couriaga, a man with a tattooed shoulder, and Paraberi, adorned in an animal-skin cloak. These indigenous people were mercilessly exterminated by colonists who invaded their land. Another heart-wrenching image showcases Grou Aagara, a man with scarification on his chest and an animal-skin cape. Alongside him stands Arra-Maida carrying her child on her back in a kangaroo papoose. These Tasmanian natives suffered the same cruel fate as their fellow countrymen – wiped out by relentless colonization. Schinz's illustrations also shed light on endangered species like the vulnerable Yak and Arabian oryx. The musk ox and Rhim gazelle face similar threats to their survival. With each brushstroke meticulously crafted by Brodtmann, these lithographs serve as both artistic masterpieces and urgent calls for conservation. Tragically extinct creatures are not forgotten within Schinz's work either; he immortalizes animals like the Quagga – once roaming freely but now forever lost to us – alongside endangered beings like the Onager. In addition to mammals facing dire circumstances, Schinz explores avian life too. His lithographs portray bats such as Megaderma lyra and Hipposideros diadema while showcasing unique specimens like Sunda flying lemurs that gracefully glide through tropical forests. The Illustrated Natural History also delves into feline history with depictions of Barbary lions - majestic females whose existence is now confined to the pages of Schinz's work.
