Amidst the pages of 'The Adventure of Black Peter' and 'Sherlock Holmes,' we find moments of helplessness, as in Gillray's engraving 'A Punting Expedition on the Thames,' where half-a-dozen fellows lay helplessly drunk beside the cask. Contrastingly, the HMS Irresistible, completed in October 1901, was anything but helpless during World War I on March 18, 1915. Meanwhile, in a lighter vein, Gillray once again satirizes fashion with 'Advantages of Wearing Muslin Dresses.' And let us not forget the tragic event of the Flood at Johnstown, USA, where helplessness was a shared experience. The engraving 'Herne Disappears' by Gillray (1756-1815, [London] : H) reminds us that even mythical figures can succumb to the unpredictable tides of life.
