The high altar holds a sacred place in religious spaces, symbolizing the heart of worship and devotion. In Westminster Abbey, London, its grandeur commands attention as it stands tall amidst the awe-inspiring architecture. The choir and high altar of St. Paul's Cathedral in Great Britain also exude a sense of reverence and spirituality. Traveling to Venice, we find ourselves captivated by the High Altar of the Church of SS. Giovanni e Paolo. Its delicate artistry on paper showcases intricate details that depict stories from the New Testament. A glimpse into history takes us to Saint James the Major's Silver Altar, where an antependium reveals scenes such as the slaughter of innocents and Judas' betrayal. This masterpiece crafted between 1287-1456 is a testament to artistic skill and storytelling. Engaging engravings transport us further back in time, depicting Mattathias fiercely defending his faith against idolatry during Ancient Greece's reigns. Returning to Saint James' Silver Altar, we witness more episodes from the New Testament beautifully depicted on its antependium – including martyrdoms and annunciations – all masterfully created by Andrea di Jacopo d'. Intriguingly, even historical events found their way into altars like Knut IV's death in Denmark's Saint Albanus Church. Christian Albrecht von Benzon immortalized this tragic moment with oil on canvas at Fyns Kunstmuseum. From London to Venice and beyond, these altars stand as testaments to human creativity intertwined with spiritual devotion throughout centuries past.
