"Honouring the Spirit of Bacchus: A Toast to Dionysus and Wine" In a grand celebration reminiscent of ancient times, Alexander Duckham hosted a lavish dinner at the prestigious Savoy Hotel. The atmosphere was filled with mirth and revelry as guests indulged in the pleasures of Bacchus, paying homage to the god of wine. Amidst this opulent affair, one couldn't help but be reminded of "The Giant Factotum amusing himself, " an intriguing artwork published by Hannah Humphrey in 1797. Just like this mischievous figure, we found ourselves captivated by the joyous spirit that enveloped us. Yet, amidst our festivities, we were reminded of more solemn occasions where honour took different forms. The recovery of the Colours of the 24th during the Zulu War in Buffalo River stood as a testament to bravery and sacrifice. It served as a poignant reminder that honour is not only reserved for moments of jubilation but also for those who have fought valiantly on distant battlefields. Our journey through cultures led us to witness Japan's Bon Odori festival—a vibrant celebration where ancestral spirits are honoured through dance and music. We marveled at their deep-rooted respect for tradition and their commitment to preserving their heritage. Further east, standing tall against time's relentless march was Lushun Baiyu Tower in Lushunkou, China (Ryojun). This architectural marvel symbolized resilience and reverence towards history—an embodiment of how honour can withstand even the harshest winds. Closer to home, within Westminster Abbey's hallowed halls lay the Tomb of Unknown Soldier—a sacred space dedicated to commemorating those whose identities remain forever shrouded in mystery. Here lies an eternal tribute reminding us all that every life deserves recognition and remembrance. As we ventured forth across borders, plaques honoring Red Victims spoke volumes about collective memory—acknowledging the sacrifices made during tumultuous times.
