Jeremy Brett's chilling portrayal of Sherlock Holmes in 'The Hound of the Baskervilles' (1988) brought Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's classic mystery to life. As Holmes and Sir Henry Baskerville approached the ominous Dartmoor moor, a figure of a man was said to have been seen upon the tor. In Sidney Paget's illustration from the March 1902 issue of The Strand Magazine, we see Holmes and Henry standing before Widecombe-in-the-Moor Church, the ominous presence of the hound looming over them. As they continued their investigation, Holmes stopped suddenly and stared fixedly up over Henry's head into the air, sensing the hound's presence. The illustration from the same issue depicts a scene of suspense, with field buttercups in the foreground and a terrified maid lying in the center where she had fallen. Doyle's words and Paget's illustrations continue to captivate and terrify readers, leaving us wondering what other mysteries the Hound of the Baskervilles holds.
