"Houses and Housing: A Glimpse into the Past" Step back in time to Kirkby Market, Merseyside on Wednesday 3rd December 1975. The bustling market square was surrounded by rows of houses, each with their own stories to tell. Meanwhile, in Uxbridge, Bakers Yard faced its fate as slum clearance began to make way for a new Underground station. The transformation promised progress but also bid farewell to a piece of history. From above, an aerial view captured the Bilton Grange estate in Hull on 1st March 1973. This vast expanse of homes stood as a testament to urban planning and community development efforts during that era. In contrast, Hulme Crescents in Manchester showcased a different approach to housing development – situated within the Hulme district, these towering structures were once hailed as modern marvels but later became synonymous with social issues. Traveling further south brought us to Cemetery Road Porth on 10th October 1978 where dilapidated properties stood as reminders of neglect and decay. These crumbling buildings told tales of forgotten lives and communities left behind. In Torquay's Stentiford Hill, we witnessed homes shortly before their demolition in 1964. Once filled with laughter and memories, they now awaited their inevitable fate - making room for progress or perhaps new beginnings. The postwar pre-fabs in Cadewell took us back to the vibrant decade of the 1960s when innovative housing solutions emerged amidst rapid urbanization. These temporary dwellings served as stepping stones towards better living conditions for many families. Delving deeper into history revealed Quarry Steps in Clifton Bristol from 1949 - a snapshot frozen in time showcasing life amid industrial surroundings. Contrastingly, Victorian times painted a grim picture with one of Bristol's many slums captured through lens around the1890s; reminding us how far society has come in terms of housing conditions.
