Houx, also known as European holly, is a beautiful evergreen shrub with glossy green leaves and bright red berries. This plant has been used for centuries in holiday decorations, symbolizing hope and protection. The spiky leaves of the it can said to ward off evil spirits and bring good luck to those who display them in their homes. In addition to its symbolic significance, it is prized for its ornamental value in gardens and landscapes. Its dense growth habit makes it a popular choice for creating privacy screens or hedgerows. The vibrant red berries add a pop of color to winter landscapes, attracting birds and other wildlife. Despite its beauty they can be toxic if ingested by humans or pets, so caution should be taken when handling this plant. With proper care and maintenance, however they can thrive in a variety of growing conditions and provide year-round interest in the garden.
