Ichikawa Omezo I, a renowned actor of the late 18th century, captivated audiences with his versatile performances and striking stage presence. In various roles captured by artists such as Katsukawa Shuncho, Katsukawa Shun'ei, Toshusai Sharaku, Utagawa Kunimasa, and Utagawa Toyokuni I, Ichikawa Omezo I showcased his immense talent. In one depiction from c. 1780/1801 by Katsukawa Shuncho titled "The Actors Onoe Matsusuke I and Ichikawa Omezo I at a Teahouse, " we see the actors engaged in conversation amidst the lively atmosphere of a teahouse. Their animated expressions hint at the camaraderie shared between them offstage. Another portrayal by Katsukawa Shun'ei captures Ichikawa Omezo I as the boatman Takihei (?) in the play "Ofunamori Ebi no. . " circa 1792. The artist skillfully depicts him in action on a boat, showcasing his ability to embody different characters convincingly. In yet another print from around the 1790s also by Katsukawa Shun'ei titled "The Actor Ichikawa Omezo I, " we witness his captivating gaze and dignified posture that exude confidence and charisma, and is evident that he was highly regarded for his stage presence during this period. One particularly notable role played by Ichikawa Omezo I was that of Tomita Hyotaro (Shodai Ichikwa Omezô no Tomita Hyotarô) depicted in an artwork created by Toshusai Sharaku in 1794. This portrayal showcases not only his acting skills but also highlights the collaboration between actors as he shares the scene with Otani Oniji III as Kawashima.
