Isoda Masakatsu, also known as Isoda Koryusai, was a renowned Japanese artist who flourished during the Edo period. His works encompassed various themes and subjects, showcasing his exceptional talent and artistic versatility. One of his notable creations is "Five Young Boys Rolling a Large Snowball, " painted around 1772. This charming piece captures the innocence and joy of childhood as five boys playfully engage in rolling a massive snowball. In contrast to this lively scene, Isoda Koryusai's "Courtesan Looking Back at Shadows on the Shoji" depicts a moment of introspection. Created circa 1770, it portrays a courtesan gazing back at her own shadow projected onto shoji screens, evoking feelings of solitude and contemplation. Another masterpiece by Isoda Masakatsu is "Hares Playing in Surf on a Moonlit Night. " Painted around 1771, this artwork showcases his skillful depiction of nature's beauty. The serene moonlit night serves as the backdrop for hares frolicking amidst crashing waves—a harmonious blend of tranquility and movement. "Cranes in an Iris Pond at Sunrise" transports viewers to another enchanting realm created by Isoda Koryusai. Crafted in 1774, this painting captures the elegance and gracefulness of cranes wading through irises under the soft glow of sunrise—an exquisite portrayal that embodies harmony between flora and fauna. "Mandarin Ducks Swimming under Plum Branch" (1764/75) reveals Isoda Masakatsu's ability to capture delicate moments within nature. Mandarin ducks gracefully navigate beneath blooming plum branches—a symbol often associated with love—creating an atmosphere imbued with tenderness and romance. "Pheasants under Branch of Peach Blossoms" (1764/75) further exemplifies Koryusai's mastery over depicting animals amid natural settings.
