Ivan IV, also known as Ivan the Terrible, was a significant figure in Russian history. Born in 1530, he ruled as the Tsar of Russia from 1547 until his death in 1584. Ivan's reign marked both achievements and atrocities that shaped the nation. Constantin Stanislavski, a renowned Russian actor and director, portrayed Ivan IV on stage with great intensity and depth. His black-and-white photo captures the essence of this complex ruler. In 1550, Ivan implemented The Code of Law (Sudebnik), which aimed to establish a legal framework for governing Russia. This code played a crucial role in shaping the country's legal system for centuries to come. However, not all aspects of Ivan's rule were positive. In Livonia during 1577-1578, Russian forces committed brutal atrocities against their enemies. Anonymous artists depicted these horrifying events through powerful illustrations that serve as reminders of this dark chapter in history. Hans Wengel's painting "The Czar Ivan the Terrible" portrays an older version with an air of authority and power surrounding him. Luigi Giarre's artwork from "Il costume antico. . " showcases historical figures including Ivan IV amongst other notable rulers like Rurik and Vladimir the Great. It highlights his significance within Russian monarchy throughout time. Grigori Sedov captured an intense moment between Ivan IV and Malyuta Skuratov in his painting from 1870. This depiction reflects their complicated relationship as allies turned adversaries during turbulent times. "Ivan IV (engraving)" provides us with another visual representation showcasing his distinctive appearance while ruling over Russia. One incident that stands out is the arrest of Metropolitan Philip depicted by an oil-on-canvas artwork created in 1910. This event demonstrated how even religious leaders faced consequences under Ivan's rule. Intrigue surrounds stories such as "A Finnish sorcerer foretelling the imminent death of Ivan the Terrible.
