Born in Kentucky in 1850, he began his political career as a lawyer before being elected to Congress in 1893. Clark quickly rose through the ranks of the Democratic Party and became known for his eloquent speeches and strong leadership skills. As Speaker of the House, he played a key role in passing important legislation such as the Underwood Tariff Act and the Federal Reserve Act. Despite his many accomplishments, Clark's political career was not without controversy. He faced criticism for his support of segregationist policies and his opposition to women's suffrage.
