James Boswell, also known as Percy, was a prominent figure in the 18th and 19th centuries. Born in 1729 and passing away in 1811, he left an indelible mark on history. Through various artworks and engravings, we catch glimpses of his life. One such artwork depicts Mr. Davies Shop on Russell Street in 1881, and is unknown who created this piece, but it gives us a glimpse into the world that Boswell inhabited during his time. Another notable artwork is titled "Dr Johnson and Boswell in Fleet Street, " painted by Charles Green in 1884. This painting immortalizes the friendship between Boswell and Dr. Samuel Johnson, showcasing their intellectual bond amidst the bustling streets of London. In "Known Characters in a Chop House" from the early 19th century, we see Boswell surrounded by other well-known individuals of his time. This anonymous creation captures the essence of social gatherings where ideas were exchanged over hearty meals. The painting "Les Gourmands" from around the same period showcases Boswell's love for fine dining and indulgence alongside others who shared his passion for gastronomy. Engravings like "The Drawing Room at Thrale Place" and "Johnson and Boswell at the Mitre" provide insights into specific locations where important conversations took place – places like Chesterfield House or Sir Joshua Reynolds House – where influential minds gathered to discuss matters of great importance. Boswell's connection to Southwark can be seen through lithographs depicting Thrales Brewery or Northumberland House – both significant landmarks during his lifetime. Lastly, an engraving shows us Edmund Burke's seat at Beaconsfield – a place that likely held significance for Boswell due to their close association with one another. Through these artworks spanning different mediums - paintings, engravings, lithographs - we gain insight into James Boswell's life, his friendships, and the places that shaped him.
