James Duffield: A 19th Century Artist Capturing the Essence of Kent and Beyond Step into the world of James Duffield, a talented artist hailing from Aylesford, near Maidstone in Kent during the 19th century. Known for his exceptional skills in capturing landscapes and architectural designs, Duffield's work continues to captivate art enthusiasts even today. In 1838, while residing in Montpelier, France, James Tibbitts Willmore recognized Duffield's artistic prowess and collaborated with him on a creation that would leave an indelible mark. Their joint effort resulted in a masterpiece titled "Beilstein on the Moselle, " which was showcased at the new watercolor exhibition of 1845. Duffield's passion for architecture shone through his work as seen in "Rural Architecture. " This series of designs for ornamental cottages published in 1823 displayed his meticulous attention to detail and innovative ideas. His talent extended beyond drawings as he also contributed to suggestions for alterations to buildings adjoining Westminster Hall in London around c1825. The beauty of Florence was not lost on Duffield either. In one of his creations named "Ponte Santa Trinita, " he skillfully depicted this iconic bridge before 1832, showcasing both its grandeur and historical significance. Collaborating with W. S. , an unknown creator, J. D. Harding produced remarkable pieces that left viewers awestruck by their sheer brilliance. Together they brought forth artworks that stood out amongst their contemporaries. Duffield's love for nature is evident when exploring his painting titled "View at Dorking" set against the serene backdrop of Surrey during the 19th century. The delicate strokes effortlessly captured the essence of this picturesque location. Allington Castle held a special place in Duffield's heart as it served as inspiration for multiple works such as "Moonlight" and "Kent.
