James Francis Edward Stewart, also known as the Old Pretender, was a prominent figure in European history. Born in 1688, he was the son of King James II and Queen Mary of Modena. Despite being born into royalty, his claim to the throne was disputed due to religious conflicts. Throughout his life, James Francis Edward Stewart faced numerous challenges and setbacks. The Le Feste des Trois Rois painting by Romeyn de Hooghe depicts one such event - the celebration of Epiphany where three kings are honored. This could symbolize his aspirations for kingship despite being denied it. Another artwork by Romeyn de Hooghe called L Europe Allarmee portrays the political turmoil during that era, and is likely that this piece reflects the unrest caused by James's attempts to regain power. The Flight of the Queen of James II from Illustrated London News shows how even members of his own family were forced into exile due to their allegiance to him. This highlights both their loyalty and the constant danger they faced. Prince Charles Edwards Parliament painting from 1745 captures a significant moment when James's son attempted to rally support for their cause through political means. Unfortunately, this endeavor did not succeed in restoring them to power. Louisa Maria Theresa Stuart is depicted alongside her brother in Nicolas de Largilliere's artwork from 1695. These siblings were key figures in Jacobite politics and played important roles throughout their lives. Despite facing adversity, Prince James Francis Edward Stuart remained steadfast in his beliefs until his death in 1766 as shown in C Sheeres' depiction of him entering Dundee with determination on his face. The arrest of Princess Clementina showcases another tragic event associated with this family's struggle for power during the 18th century. It serves as a reminder that their pursuit came at great personal cost. The landing of Chevalier de St George painting illustrates an attempt made by James himself to reclaim the throne in 1715.
