Jean Victor Dupin was a botanist and horticulturist known for his extensive knowledge of various plant species. His expertise spanned from African bowstring hemp to Sansevieria hyacinthoides, showcasing his passion for diverse flora. He also had a deep understanding of the Cornucopian shrub, Copianthus indica, Hil, which symbolized abundance and prosperity. Dupin's admiration for nature extended to grape vines, where he marveled at the beauty of leaves and budding grapes on Vitis vinifera. In autumn, he found solace in the delicate petals of the Colchicum autumnale or naked ladies as they bloomed like crocuses across meadows. The candlenut tree, Crotn laccifer, fascinated Dupin with its multifunctional properties - from providing oil for lamps to being used in traditional medicine. Another intriguing plant that caught his attention was the starfish flower or carrion plant (Stapelia hirsuta Linn), which emitted an odor resembling decaying flesh to attract pollinating insects. Dupin's love for trees led him to study Lebanon cedar (Cedrus libani Pinus cedrus Linn) extensively. These majestic evergreens captivated him with their towering presence and historical significance. In addition to studying plants' physical attributes, Dupin delved into their medicinal properties. He recognized Common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) as a valuable source of natural remedies while appreciating the aromatic allure of Common jasmine (Jasminum officinale). Even lesser-known plants held fascination for Dupin; he explored Low mallow or round-leaved mallow (Malva pusilla), appreciating its unique characteristics and contribution to biodiversity. The Starfish plant Orbea variegata 1 intrigued him with its striking appearance while white swallow-wort Vincetoxicum hirundinaria 2 added a touch of elegance to his botanical collection.
