John Mead Howells was a prominent American architect known for his contributions to the Beaux-Arts style of architecture. Born in 1868, Howells studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris before returning to the United States to establish his own practice. Throughout his career, Howells designed numerous notable buildings, including the Chicago Tribune Tower and the New York Public Library's Mid-Manhattan Branch. His work was characterized by its classical proportions, intricate detailing, and grandeur. In addition to his architectural achievements, Howells was also a respected educator and author. He taught at Columbia University and wrote several influential books on architecture theory and history.
